Rendering FAQs -What is rendering?

Rendering the outside of a building involves adding an extra layer or coating to the brickwork of a house. There are various types and styles of rendering that can be used and one of the most established rendering products available for homes in the UK is silicone-based coating from K Rend.

What are the benefits of rendering?

Rendering has many benefits. Adding an extra layer to the outside of a home helps to protect the brickwork and provides improved insulation to a home. This doesn’t just mean a warmer, more environmentally home. Using a silicone-based render that’s highly water-resistant also means that damp and moisture are kept away from penetrating and damaging the brickwork - and the inside of a home is a drier, healthier environment to live in!

As well as protecting the house and having an impact on the inside of a home, rendering with the right solution can also make the outside of a home look much nicer. K Rend products, for example, are available in a range of colours (such as Pistachio, Mocha and Granite) and textures including a scraped texture and roughcast.

When is it best to render?

Unlike plastering and painting a house, rendering can be done even when the weather isn’t great. External housework will always be impacted by extreme weather such as snow, high winds and heavy rain but rendering can be done at a time in the year that suits you.

You don’t need to wait until repairs are needed to the outside of your property before you consider rendering. It can be done at any time and in fact, should be done BEFORE any potential damage to brickwork or the structure as rending will help protect your home!

How long does it take to render a house?

The time it takes to render the outside of a property can depend on a number of factors such as the size of the property, the type of render (including how many coats a type requires) and the weather but the time it takes is typically 1-2 weeks. Your home should be fully rendered and looking amazing in a matter of weeks, not months!

Which type of rendering is best?

We strongly believe in silicone-based render and to ensure the best quality product we use silicon-based render from K Rend. From experience, this product is the highest quality, most durable solution on the market and it’s a proven solution, having been applied to buildings in the UK for many years!

How long does rendering last?

Most solutions on the market suggest 25-30 years but we see properties on a regular basis that still have render that was applied around 50 years ago! Whatever the figure is, you don’t need to apply it very often and it’s much less hassle than painting which needs to be done every 2-3 years!

Does render require maintenance?

Silicone-based render requires very little maintenance although we recommend checking regularly for cracks. Accidents happen and extreme weather can have an impact but as a general rule, you shouldn’t need to provide any major maintenance or repairs during its life time. Plastering or Rendering? Which is best?

Which option you go with depends on your plans for your home and your budget. When it comes to long-term value for money and maximum protection of your home, we recommend rendering. Not only does it protect and insulate your home, but it also only needs to be done once every 25-30 years!
