Dry lining and partition walls
Dry lining is a method of construction used to create walls and ceilings.
Dry lining and dot-and-dab are interchangeable terms. Dry lining is the process of attaching plasterboard to a wall by dotting adhesive across the existing surface. The plasterboard, hiding uneven surfaces, cracks and blemishes, hides the existing wall. The final appearance is a totally smooth and even surface, which is ready to be painted, or covered with wallpaper.
This method of lining walls offers a quick and simple alternative to traditional plastering, and one that M Coatings fully understand. Our experts can advise on how this method of walling can best be used within your home.
Installing drywall (lining)
Installing drywall (lining) is a reasonably quick process, particularly compared with plastering. The plasterboard can be cut to shape easily and simply, and once cut and positioned corner beads are attached to give a straight edge where required. Walls need to be taped with paper or fibreglass mesh tape in the corners and where the boards meet. Finally joints are covered with up to three layers of joint compound, with each layer being applied allowed to dry and then sanded to give a smooth finish for painting.
Advantages of dry lining
- Installation of dry lining is quicker than plastering
- Less labour costs
- Less disruption and mess within the property
- Reduces noise transfer
- Dry lining has good fire-retardant properties
- Dry lining can accommodate design features such as arches
- Very durable
- Simple to repair

Standard partitions
Standard partition walls are usually made from a two-by-four wall stud 3½ inches/90mm wide, which then has dry lining installed on both sides. The finished wall is then approximately 5 inches/127mm wide. However walls can be produced to whatever depth required – the perfect answer to hiding plumbing or heating pipes. This flexibility offers the homeowner the perfect solution when needing to conceal internal pipes or wires – offering the luxury of a smooth wall without losing much space, and without having pipes or wires on the surface.

Timber partitions, like timber joist floors have been used for many years in traditional domestic situations. Their fire separating elements are well known and have been tested in real fire situations. Timber performance in a fire is known and it chars at a slow rate – approximately 40mm per hour. It also retains its structural integrity, which is extremely important safety point.
A fire-rated partition prevents fire spreading by creating a structure that contains the fire for a given period of time, and it remains solid and does not collapse. It is essential to determine the required fire resistance of the partition and then build the partition accordingly. There are many products on the market, which means that the ideal solution for absolutely any situation can be built. Ensuring that your home is perfect for how you want to live.
