Correct insulation requirements for a home
There are many simple, yet effective, ways to insulate your home which can significantly reduce heat loss while lowering your heating bills.
Have you just purchased a property? Or perhaps started to renoavte a property and need to upgrade your insulation or require damp proofing and insulation advice, we can help.
The construction of your property and the year it was built will depend on the insulation system that you have in place already and what will be possible to upgrade your current insulation.
If you're unsure if your property has the correct level of insulation to keep the temperature of your building regular, then call our insulation contractors at M Coatings for expert advice.
We can also advise on laws for building insulation in UK. For instance, in 2006, the UK adopted Building Regulations (parts L1 and L2) which are enforced in the building industry. These regulations deal with the conservation of fuel and power. The actual regulations require that loft insulation should be at least 270 mm thick and must have good thermal properties.
So, whether you need to insulate the ground floor, solid walls or roof area, insulating your property correctly will save you money on heating and in the long term will save you money on major building repairs too.
There are many areas that you can have insulated in a building and they all contribute to the end goal, which is to save energy and to save money of heating the property and as mentioned, potential building repairs if the insulation is not up to the correct standards.
Which areas of a building can be insulated?
Here is a list of areas in a home (or commercial premises) that can be insulated:
Cavity walls - referred to as cavity wall insulation. The cavity should be at least 50mm wide and the walls need to be in good condition to be suitable for cavity wall insulation. If your house was built in the past 10 years, it's likely that the cavity walls have already been insulated but if you're in any doubt, ask our team of insulation contractors
Roof and loft insulation - insulating your loft, attic space or flat roof can dramatically reduce heat loss. Always be careful when checking roof spaces and do not store items directly on top of roof insulation as this can reduce it's performance.
Water tanks, pipes and radiators - lagging water tanks and water pipes whilst also insulating behind radiators reduces heat loss too
Floor boards - insulating under the floor boards on the ground floor or basement of your property can save you money on your heating bills each year. If you have bare floor boards this type of insulation is especially effective in keeping heat in.
Solid wall insulation - for older properties especially, if you have solid walls, we would recommend these to be insulated because solid walls allow twice as much heat loss than cavity walls. For expert advice on insulating solid walls, please contact our team of insulation contractors at M Coatings
Draught proofing - draught proofing doors and windows is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to save energy and money. Draught proofing can be done on any building
Damp proofing - Damp proofing controls the moisture in building walls and floors from passing into the interior spaces. Dampness problems are among the most frequent problems encountered in buildings. Any property can be subject to damp problems, especially older properties which may have been constructed without a damp-proof membrane.
Condensation - dealing with condensation straight away can prevent damp and mould problems later. For instance, in steamy bathrooms, always have your extractor fan on and the window open (if you have a window) and keep the door shut to avoid the steam passing through to other rooms.
